Bilingualism

The perfect bilingual child is the one who is in a daily contact with two languages, i.e. when parents speak two different languages. Then, the child can speak either one or the other language, without any difficulty. He/she has approximately the same level of vocabulary developments in the two languages. He/she can easily handle the oral and written aspects of the two languages

What we propose in the Bilingual Section is a simulation of this bilingual environment during school time. The students, at the end of their studies, will be very fluent in French, and will be able to go for higher education in French.

THE BILINGUAL PROGRAMME

Our Bilingual Section starts from Grade 1 and has an adapted programme.

For each class, a special timetable and a special syllabus have been studied and prepared, so that:

·    more periods are allotted for French language teaching

·    more class activities will be conducted in French language

·    some subjects will be taught mainly in French

The introduction of subjects taught in French will be progressive, and will be introduced first with communicative subjects such as sport, art, home economics, etc. Every year, the scope of French will be widened.

The subjects taught in French will also be modified regularly, in order to teach every subject in both languages so that each student is adequately prepared for Nigerian examinations.

In Grade 5, students should be very fluent in French so that at the end of their secondary school education, the students will have the standard knowledge and be able to register in any Francophone University, just like any other French speaker.

Please note that unless your child already has a good knowledge of French, he has to start from the first year (Grade One), in order to gradually acquire a progressive linguistic knowledge.

THE FRANCOPHONE RESOURCES

The teaching of a language requires that students are, as much as possible, in contact with the language.

It is therefore important to use some audio-visual materials (TV, video, CDs, etc.).

The child will also have to be in constant communication situation as often as possible.

Some projections of movies in French, some meetings with French speaking children and even some excursions will be organised regularly.

The contact with books and magazines is important. Our library has a growing French Corner, and we have different subscriptions of French children magazines (Pomme d’Api, Popi, etc.)

EXAMINATIONS

Apart from the normal Nigerian examinations, special French examinations will also be proposed, in cooperation with the Alliance Francaise and the French Embassy.

The Alliance Française Examinations

·                CEFP1 / 2

·                DS

The French Ministry of Education Examinations

·                DELF

·                DALF

These examinations are organised and recognised worldwide.

They allow entry to Francophone universities without passing a linguistic test.

Note that University education in France is FREE.

France only requires that you pay for accommodation, daily expenses and insurance.
